My Windows 8 Experience

So here’s what I think of Windows 8.

I keep a nice, well-designed Samsung laptop around for keeping au courant with the latest developments in WindowsLand. I’m not quite sure why I want to do that, save perhaps some kind of lingering geek pride, even if I have mostly gotten over my former interest in IT-stuff. I was a Windows NT network administrator there for a while, after all. Not as my profession or for my living, mind you, but I managed an academic computer center, Windows Server, Active Directory, all that stuff.

Anyway. I generally keep up with Windows stuff, however sporadically. Ergo my Samsung laptop, which came with Windows 7 installed – together with a pile of utterly horrid crapola that I spent hours removing. So I decided to upgrade the Samsung to Windows 8, in the interest of staying abreast of the latest prides and joys from Redmond.

I left it on the computer for a while. Today I took the Samsung back to base metal. I wiped out the hard drive completely, built an altogether new and freshly-formatted partition. I installed Windows 7 on it. I spent the afternoon, amidst other activities, grabbing the appropriate drivers and utilities from the Samsung web site, re-installing MS Office, and a few other goodies.

Back to Windows 7.

And that’s what I think of Windows 8.
