Symphony Speaking

This year has seen me enter yet another activity in my musical career, on top of the umpty-million things I’ve done so far. I agreed to become one of the “Inside Music” lecturers for the San Francisco Symphony, giving the pre-concert lectures to the subscription and open-rehearsal audiences.

It has proven to be a nearly-ideal match between performer and institution. The two weeks I served in April are among the happier musical experiences I’ve had in some time. I’m good at both entertaining and instructing the audience, without becoming dull and overly-detailed but also without pandering or talking down to them. A lot of what I’ve gained in 30+ years of my career is coming in good stead for these lectures.

So I’ll be continuing this particular activity, that’s for sure.
